PPG EPOXY PREPARATION AND APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
CLEAN FLOOR, SPRAY CLEAN & ETCH, COLOR, COLOR (CHIPS), CLEAR
SURFACE PREPARATION
The most important factor and the foundation of any coating system is the surface preparation. The purpose of surface preparation is to remove all contaminants that can interfere with adhesion and to develop a surface roughness to promote physical bond.
- CONCRETE TEMPERATURE MUST BE AT LEAST 5 DEGREES C. New concrete must be at least 28 days old.
- OLD PAINT, SEALER, GREASE, OR COATINGS MUST BE REMOVED.
1. WASH THE FLOOR
- Oil or grease stains may require multiple cleanings (use the products listed below).
- The concrete must be dry and free of dust and debris. A moisture test is always a good idea.
- The concrete should be DUST FREE (vacuumed or swept) just before Epoxy is applied, NOT WASHED.
2. DEGREASER (Dilute up to 1:20, use pure for Heavy Duty work)
Used to remove contaminants such as; oil, grease, carbon, bacteria and algae.
Cleans many surfaces; concrete, masonry, wood, iron, steel, stainless steel, fiberglass, and most plastics.
- Apply with a brush, a cloth, or a pressurized pressure washer, pure or diluted.
- To clean heavy oil and grease stains use full strength and blot with a cotton cloth.
3. CLEAN & ETCH (1 gallon = up to 300 sq. feet coverage)
Powerful water based adherence promoter for concrete; fully biodegradable, low toxicity and clean odor.
- Apply full strength to a dry floor using a sprayer after removing grease or contaminants.
- Use a hard brush to scrub into surface, let dry, then rinse with water.
- LET CONCRETE DRY FOR AT LEAST 12 TO 24 HOURS BEFORE APPLYING EPOXY.
4. COLOR COAT (1 gallon = 250-325 sq. feet coverage)
PPG’s 2 component Water-Borne Epoxy interior coating system is designed for use in commercial or industrial environments where a tough, impact, abrasion, mar, and stain resistant coating is required. PPG Aquapon WB Epoxy has chemical and solvent resistance equal to that of solvent based Epoxy coatings, has superior abrasion resistance, and is suitable for vertical surfaces. This color is self-priming.
- Application - Pour PPG Epoxy Color B 98-98 into Color A 98-3 just before using (1:1 ratio)
- Color rolls on darker than it dries so you can see were you have been.
- APPLY ONE COAT – LET DRY – APPLY SECOND COAT – ADD COLOR CHIPS AS 2ND COAT APPLIED
COLOR CHIPS
- Application - Broadcast onto final color coat as you apply.
- You must apply clear coat to seal.
5. CLEAR COAT – (1 mixed gallon = 200-225 sq. feet coverage)
PPG’s 2 component solvent based clear
- Application - Pour Clear B 95-819 into Clear A 95-8000 (1:3 ratio) just before using and mix well.
- Rolls on clear & shinny and dries same; work in sections so that you don’t miss an area.
APPLICATION DRY TIME
- Mix product in small batches; once mixed product has a life of 6 hours. Discard as you would paint.
- Wait a minimum of 8-10 hours - ensure air movement - before applying next coat and a maximum of 16. If your time has gone longer than 16 hours, you will need to wait 2 - 3 weeks before you can start again.
- Feel the floor to determine if it is dry as humidity and weather are a factor.
- ALLOW 10 - 14 DAY CURE - Do not drive on floor, roll heavy equipment or lay down objects that may stick.
